Fishing Guide: Rods, Locations, Seasons, and Every Rare Fish

Updated 2026-08-27 · 7 min read · Guide Team

Everything about fishing in Fields of Mistria: how casting and reeling actually work, every rod tier and its cost, where each water type hides different fish, how to land the four legendary fish, and which skill perks are worth your essence.

Fishing Basics: Casting, Shadows, and Bites

You can cast a rod into almost any body of water in Mistria, including the pools inside the Mines. The one exception is the town fountain. To cast, equip your rod and hold the Charged Tool button (hold left click on PC). A square outline appears in the direction you face and changes color with distance; if the tile is not fishable, a red X shows and the cast fails.

In fishable water you will see dark fish shadows swimming around. They come in four sizes - small, medium, large, and giant - and size is your best hint at rarity. Aim your bobber as close to a shadow as you can. A fish that notices the bobber swims over and may nibble a few times before committing. Do not reel during nibbles: that scares it off. Wait for the exclamation mark (!) above the bobber, then press the Use Tool button to land the catch. The first time you catch each species, a card pops up showing its name, sell price, and a short description.

Occasionally several shadows clump together into a school. Fishing a school lets you hook multiple fish in rapid succession, so drop whatever you were doing and cast into it. Separately, dark dive holes in the water can be swum up to and dove into for loot and certain fish - diving costs no stamina at all, and with the Sunken Secrets perk dive holes can also cough up Sunken artifacts for the museum.

Fishing Rods, Upgrades, and Stamina

Five rod tiers exist. Better rods simply cast farther in a straight line - the charged range below is distance, not an area. Upgrades are bought at the Tackle Shop or forged yourself through Blacksmithing (4 ingots each).

Silver Fishing Rod12 tiles3,000tBlacksmithing (lvl 16)

Two things make rods unusual among tools. First, crafted rods cannot roll infusions - they are the one tool type excluded from the infusion system, so there is no lucky prefix to chase. Second, and more important for your daily routine: casting costs zero stamina. Stamina is only spent when a fish is actually hooked. That means you can re-cast endlessly to line up the perfect shadow, and fishing stays viable even on days when your stamina bar is nearly empty. The Catch of the Day perk (tier 1, 15 essence) sometimes refunds even that catch cost.

Because distance is the only thing upgrades buy, prioritize a better rod once you start fishing big water like the ocean, where giant shadows drift far from shore.

Where to Fish: Rivers, Ponds, Ocean, and the Mines

Fish tables are keyed to water type plus season. The overworld has three water types - river, pond, and ocean - and each season has its own set of five fish per water type, plus a multi-season set (Koi, Pike, Pollock, Smallmouth Bass, Trout) that is available year-round. Weather locks some species: Walleye only bites in the spring river when it rains, Mackerel wants rain or a thunderstorm, fall river fish like Grayling, Perch, and Razorback demand rain or storms, and winter's Dace, Burbot, and King Crab only show in snow or blizzards.

The Mines add five more fishing zones, one per biome, and each has its own museum set:

ZoneFloorsNotable catches
The Upper Mines2-19Cave Shrimp, Stone Loach, Rock Guppy, Cave Eel, Cave Shark (rare)
The Tide Caverns21-39Sapphire Betta, Transparent Jellyfish, Archerfish, Mini-Whale Shark (rare)
The Deep Earth41-59Pebble Minnow, Earth Eel, Rockbiter, Shardfin, Emerald Horned Charger (rare)
The Lava Caves61-79Lava Piranha, Armored Bass, Sulfur Crab, Candelabra Seadragon, Firesail Fish (rare)
The Ancient Ruins81-89, 91-99Winged Shrimp, Gazer, Luminescent Crab, Giant Jellyfish, Coelacanth (rare)

The Deep Woods has its own five-fish set as well (Sunny, Forest Perch, Lake Trout, Silver Redhorse, Muskie), with Sunny oddly preferring bad weather. If a set refuses to complete, the missing slot is almost always a weather-locked fish - check the forecast and plan a dedicated fishing day.

Rare, Legendary, and Bait-Only Fish

Every season hides at least one rare giant-shadow fish: Paddlefish (spring river), Ocean Sunfish (spring ocean), Tarpon (summer river), Grouper (summer ocean), Shark (fall ocean), Alligator Gar (winter pond), and Oarfish (winter ocean). When you see a giant shadow, clear your stamina bar and commit - these are the prestigious museum pieces, and NPCs will comment on them afterward.

The four legendary fish are a separate system. You must first buy the Legendary perk (fishing tier 3, requires level 30, costs 80 essence). After that, when the right season and weather align, you get a morning message - 'A legendary fish is nearby...' - with a silhouette of today's target:

Since v0.12.0 each legendary can only be caught once per save file, and they sell for disappointingly little - even Terithia the fisherwoman is only neutral to them as gifts. There is exactly one correct move: donate them. Skip a donation and that save's Legendary Fish set stays unfinished.

Version 0.15 added bait-only fish. Fish Bait from Terrariums lures exclusives at any fishing spot: Massive Minnow and Copper Rockfish (common bait), Iron Fish and Silver Squid (uncommon bait), and Golden Eel (rare bait). Loading bait into the Fish Trap at the beach yields a separate daily haul set: Blue Crab, Sea Urchin, Bait Thief, Hake, and the rare Amberjack.

Fishing Skill Perks Worth Your Essence

Fishing and diving level the Fishing skill, and essence is traded at Caldarus' statue on your farm for perks. The full ladder, with essence costs:

  • Tier 1 (lvl 1): Weedline Watcher 15 (less junk), Aquatic Antiquities 20 (fish up aquatic artifacts), Appealing Reeling 10 (fish notice the bobber from farther), Catch of the Day 15 (catches sometimes refund stamina).
  • Tier 2 (lvl 15): Lucky Haul 50 (occasional double fish), Perfect Catch 40 (uncommon and rare fish more common), School Crasher 50 (swim into a school to drop half its fish for free), Unexpected Haul 40 (more treasure boxes).
  • Tier 3 (lvl 30): Full Class I 75 (+1 fish per school), Legendary 80 (enables legendary fish), Treasure Trove 70 (no more wooden boxes, better box tiers), Weedline Watcher II 75.
  • Tier 4 (lvl 45): Appealing Reeling II 155, Frenzy 150 (catches sometimes spawn a school nearby), What a Catch 145 (fish drop coins worth 10% of value), Lucky Haul II 150.
  • Tier 5 (lvl 60): Abyssal Ascendence 205 (chance to fish up Abyssal Chests with unique clothing or an Essence Stone).

A sensible order: Appealing Reeling first (it speeds up every catch), then Perfect Catch for rares, then Legendary the moment you hit 30 so you stop missing seasonal windows. School Crasher plus Frenzy is the endgame combo - Frenzy manufactures schools and School Crasher harvests them stamina-free.

Filling the Museum's Fish Wing

The Fish Wing holds 22 sets. Thirteen are overworld sets (multi-season plus four seasons x three water types), five are mine-biome sets, and the rest are Deep Woods, Fish Bait, Fish Trap, and the four-slot Legendary set - the only set that needs 4 items instead of the usual 5.

Working rules that save you a second year of grinding:

  • Donate the first of every species, sell only duplicates. Every set needs exactly one of each fish.
  • Legendaries are single-catch per save. Always donate; never sell or gift them.
  • Unlock Aquatic Antiquities early. The Aquatic artifact set in the Archaeology Wing only drops while fishing with that tier-1 perk active.
  • Track weather. Rain, storm, snow, and blizzard fish are the usual completion blockers, so fish aggressively on bad-weather days instead of staying home.

Duplicated commons like Anchovy or Chub are safe to sell in bulk, and fish-based cooking is another good sink for extras. Just keep one specimen of everything until the set card in the museum confirms your donation registered.

💡 Pro Tip

Shadow size is a rarity leak: giant shadows are almost always the set's rare fish. On storm or blizzard mornings, check for the 'A legendary fish is nearby...' message before you do anything else - that day's legendary window will not wait for your farm chores.
